Launch date and origin: August 28th, 1964. Vanderberg Air Force Base, CA.
Mission objective: Climate prediction
Accomplishments: First full global mapping including terrain, weather, solar and microwave radiation using both day and infrared cameras.
With a Latin word for origin, the Nimbus mission was a 14-year series of seven satellites launches starting in 1964 and making the final launch in 1978. They collected data for 30 years using 33 different instruments.
The impact of this mission was achieved by a revolutionary and accurate weather forecast technology that set the foundation of modern climate change studies as well as the road for future Earth observing systems.
